Bookish Playlist: The Upside of Unrequited

Hey Bookworms!

Unfortunately there will be no Top 5 Wednesday today, but I have decided to make it up to you by making another playlist. As you can probably tell from the title, this playlist is for The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli where we meet Molly who has a total of 26 crushes that have gone nowhere. She doesn’t believe she is good enough to put herself out there but with the help of the people around her, she is able to accept herself. Oh and there may be a crush number 27…

Without further ado, let’s get started!

*Disclaimer: there are a few spoilers ahead.

1. Shades of Cool – Lana del Rey

  • This song was playing when Molly and Reid went grocery shopping and it seemed fitting at the time.

2. Stacy’s Mom (M)

  • The next few songs marked with (M) were a part of this grocery scene as well.

3. Sk8er Boi – Avril Lavigne (M)

4. I’m not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman (M)

5. In da club – 50 Cent (M)

6. 1000 Miles – Vanessa Carlisle (M)

7. Justin Timberlake (M)

  • It only mentioned his name and I’m not sure which of his songs to pick from.

8. You Can’t Hurry Love – The Supremes

  • I feel like either Nadine or Patty would have given this type of advice to Molly (even though they sort of did)
  • Key Lyrics:

I remember mama said-

You can’t hurry love
No, you just have to wait
She said love don’t come easy
It’s a game of give and take

You can’t hurry love
No, you just have to wait
She said trust, give it time
No matter how long it takes

9. Just Like Heaven – The Cure

  • Something about it reminded me of Molly and crush number 27.

10. Harvest Moon – Neil Young

  • This will probably be the biggest spoiler on here so keep scrolling if you don’t want to be spoiled.
  • I could honestly picture Nadine and Patty dancing to this at their wedding.

11. Americano – Lady Gaga

  • I read that this song was about when gay marriage was legalized and it reminded me of a part in the book.

12. I Want You to Want Me – Cheap Trick

  • Might be cruel but this is for Molly and her 27 crushes. (Then again is it really cruel if I’m basically Molly? Or am I just roasting myself now? – probably the latter)

13. I Do Believe (I fell in love) – Donna Summer

  • For a certain almost heated scene that I do not want to spoil.

14. Born This Way – Lady Gaga

  • This could go for everyone in the book. I love how Becky Albertalli had a lot of characters in the LGBTQ+ community and no one was judged for it. It doesn’t matter what others think because in the end all that matters is what you think.

15. How to Be a Heartbreaker – Marina and the Diamonds

  • I could so picture Cassie, Mina, Olivia, and Abby performing this song to Molly. Or I this reminded me of how they would tell Molly the do’s and do not’s about dating.

That’s all for today folks! I hope you enjoyed!

Until next time,
