It’s been a long time since I’ve done a top 5 Wednesday and I’m sorry! I’m just not super into this month’s topics and/or I don’t have any options for any of the topics. Nonetheless, I don’t want to skip another top 5 Wednesday even though this may be posted super late. So today I decided to make my own topic and that is….. My Top 5 Favorite Places to Shop for Books! (And yes that includes comic book shops)
*Unless it’s a large commercial store (e.g. Walmart, etc.), all places are located in Southern California
Half Off Books – Fullerton, CA
This was the first Indie bookstore I’ve ever been to and it used to be located in my hometown but now they moved to Fullerton which is great because it’s only 2 miles away from my Uni. They sell both used and brand new books as well as records, CDs, movies, art, and comics. I believe at the end of every month or every so often they host a “fire sale” where most books are less than $5. I haven’t been able to go as much as I used to now that they moved, but hopefully I will once I get a car.
Undercity Comics – Whittier, CA
So this comic book store is located not too far from where Half Off Books used to be so after going to Half Off Books, I’d walk over to this comic store. I haven’t gone in a while and I want to go back soon. Now I must confess, I’m a terrible comic book reader. Since I don’t know the order of the comics I just pick one and read it so don’t get mad at me if this comic store doesn’t have a specific comic you want. The owners are super nice and helpful and will even let you know if a comic you’re looking for is on its way or not.
Target! – Anywhere across America
A good majority of the books I have come from Target. They usually have a pretty good selection of YA books and I am here for that! Bonus stars for Target since their books are 20% off the cover price so you save some money. Story Time! Last weekend I went with two friends to see A Quiet Place and before the film started we decided to pass time at the Target across the street. With no intentions of buying something, we all wandered towards the books. I didn’t even realize where we were going until -oh look! Books! Yeah, all three of us ended up buying one book. I repeat, we only bought ONE book. That’s as much self control we’ll ever get. *That’s the Target we went to ^
Barnes and Noble – Anywhere across America
This one is reserved for those days when I’m feeling fancy or have extra cash to spend. I don’t know about you but Barnes and Noble can be quite pricey especially for hardcovers so I try to avoid it no matter how magical it is. However, I am planning on seeing if they’re hiring at the store near my Uni… That’d be amazing. *That’s the magical store that’s closest to me and is about 5 miles from Uni.
Dollar Book Fair – Buena Park, CA
This lovely little second hand bookstore can be found inside the Buena Park mall across the street from Knott’s Berry Farm. If you don’t know what I just said then just know it’s inside a mall across the street from a small amusement park. I didn’t even know this place existed until my friend took me one day. The only downside is that you won’t find many newer novels (e.g. newly released).
That’s a wrap! If you ever find yourself in Fullerton, CA I highly recommend Half Off Books. I think it’s under new management since I don’t recognize anyone from the old store, but I have seen a dog roaming around the store lately. So if you love dogs and books, I suggest you go. What are your favorite bookstores in your hometown?
*P.S. I’m sorry this post is so late and I realize it might not even be Wednesday anymore for some of you.
Until next time!
