Greetings and Salutations Bookworms!
I originally saw this on Jessie the Reader‘s YouTube channel and I wanted share my own reasons why I suck at reading series. Some things may be the same because well, I agree with it.
It’s Been Too Long Since I’ve Read The Previous Book and I Remember Nothing
This happens more than you think. Let’s use my case with And I Darken by Kiersten White. I read it back when it came out then when Now I Rise came out and I finally got my hands on it, I forgot every minor detail that plays a giant role in the novel. I know what you’re thinking well why don’t you just reread the previous book? And you are absolutely right my good friend, but I am lazy.
I Say I’m Going to Read ___ Book Next But…
Probably the biggest problem I have when reading series. I tell myself “ok, Addy you’re going to read ___ next and nothing’s going to stop you this time.” Soon after finishing the first book in a series, I get distracted by a shiny new book or I fall into a book slump. I said I would read A Court of Mist and Fury in December since I finished A Court of Thorns and Roses at the end of November, but here we are in February and I still haven’t started it. I also told myself I was going to reread A Court of Thorns and Roses last week, but I haven’t.
I’m Just Not Interested Anymore
I’m not saying I lost interest entirely but rather I’m not interested in continuing the series at the moment or at all (in rare cases). Which brings me to the next point…
I Overhyped Myself On the First Book and Now…
↑ Literally me during the first book
This also happens a lot where I hype myself to read the first book in a series and get all excited about it and that energy continues on until I finish the first book. Then because I used so much energy hyping myself over the first book, any book after that feels like a drag or I just want to visit a different bookish world. Any book that comes after in the series takes me forever to get through (*Cough* Cress, Glass Sword, The Merciless, Percy Jackson, Magnus Chase, Harry Potter, etc.; the list is endless).
The Series Loses It’s ~Razzle Dazzle~
You know that series that starts off so strong and good and every book after feels like it’s lost its spark? The series where no book that comes after can live up to the first book’s expectation. It happened to me with Percy Jackson unfortunately. However, I did read those way back in middle school so there is a chance I will reread them in the near future.
Behold! The main reason why I SUCK at book series. Sometimes I don’t have the money to buy every single book in the series (I’m looking at you Ms. Cassandra Clare). I know I can save by buying the boxed set, but here’s the thing I don’t have ANY money. I don’t have a job and I go to school fulltime. What I get as allowance covers lunch for the week. When I can (more like when I remember) I’ll take lunch to school and put money aside to buy books/school supplies. As of late, my primary source for buying books is the Dollar Tree (you’d be surprised to know there are good books sold for a dollar there), second hand bookstore, or at a local library’s book sale. If I save enough money, then I’ll treat myself by shopping for books at Target. If I save up even more, then I really treat myself and go to Barnes & Noble.
There you have it, my reasons why I suck at reading series as seen on Jessie the Reader’s YouTube channel. Let me know if you agree or disagree with any of these topics or have something different. See you next time!
