Greetings and Salutations, your ghost with the most here with a bookish playlist.
I finally got around to reading All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven and well… it destroyed me. It hit home in a way since my best friend also deals with bipolar disorder and I could relate to Violet not knowing what to do. I know what it feels like to feel useless during an episode as if it’s your fault that other person feels like that. Well, we don’t need to go down that path of darkness at the moment. Onward to the music!
Disclaimer: I will try my best to keep to spoiler free, but just in case, beware of spoilers!!!
- Comfortably Numb – Pink Floyd
a. I’m going to have to get personal to explain this. I have depression and have had it for years and the way Finch described his asleep state reminded me of how I feel during a depressive episode.
- God Knows I Tried – Lana del Rey
a. I feel like this could apply to both Finch and Violet by the way they’re both trying to fix each other. They’re both broken people, one far more than the other, but at the end of the day they’re tired of pretending to be happy when around others.
- Born to Die – Lana del Rey
- Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana
a. Ahh the smell of teenage angst – something you can feel throughout the novel.
- Just Another Day – Oingo Boingo
a. A song for Finch before Violet.
- Another Day – Paul McCartney
a. A song for Violet before Finch and after the accident.
- Brain Damage – Pink Floyd
a. Not sure about Finch but when I’m in my asleep mode, I find myself listening to a lot of Pink Floyd, especially Dark Side of the Moon.
b. Key Lyrics: There’s someone in my head but it’s not me
- Message to My Girl – Split Enz
a. One of the bands Finch listened to that I thought was made up. Also, it sounds a lot like a song Finch would write for Violet.
- Rock N’ Roll Suicide – David Bowie
a. I feel like this would be a song from Violet to Finch when he’s beginning to hit rock bottom and she tries to get him help.
b. Key Lyrics:
You’re watching yourself, but you’re too unfair
You got your head all tangled up, but if I could only make you care
Oh no, love, you’re not alone
No matter what or who you’ve been
No matter when or where you’ve seen
All the knives seem to lacerate your brain
I’ve had my share, I’ll help you with the pain
You’re not alone
- Little Queenie – Sadgirl
a. A cute song by a local LA band that I could imagine Finch recording it for Violet and her listening to it over and over after it happens.
Well, this was an emotional roller-coaster and I cannot wait for further news on the upcoming film (for sure I will cry more than I did when reading it).
And if you are in need of a friend or someone to talk to, I am always here to listen. You can find my email in the contact section or personal message me in any of the social media platforms linked on my website. You are not alone.
